3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 yeast cake
1/4 cup lukewarm water
1 cup white flour
3 tablespoons shortening
1/2 cup seedless raisins
1/2 cup dates, cut in pieces
1/2 cup walnut meats
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
About 1/2 cup white flour
Scald the milk, add sugar and salt, and cool until lukewarm. Add yeast, softened in lukewarm water, and the cup of white flour. Let the mixture stand until light and full of bubbles. Add shortening, melted, the fruit and nuts, whole wheat flour, and enough white flour to make a dough which can be handled. Knead thoroughly and let rise until doubled in bulk. Cut down, knead again, shape in a loaf, place in a greased pan, and let rise until doubled in bulk. Bake in a moderate oven. Time in baking, 50 minutes. Temperature, 350°. 1 loaf.
