1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar 4 eggs
1/2 cup coffee or water
3-1/4 cups pastry flour
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 squares chocolate
Cream shortening and add sugar gradually. Add eggs well beaten. Add liquid alternately with the dry ingredients mixed and sifted together. Add fruit. Bake in a large tube pan in a moderate oven. Frost and decorate with ornamental icing or with a large sheaf of citron leaves and stems with half cherries as fruit, or make a wreath of citron leaves and small "oranges" cut from thin orange peel. For a child's cake raisin "turtles" may be used. Time in cooking, 1 hour, 15 minutes. Temperature, 325 degrees.
