1/2 cup shortening
2 cups brown sugar

2-1/2 cups cake or pastry flour
1/2 cup hot water
1 teaspoon soda
Cream shortening and add sugar, salt, and cocoa. Add sour milk and vanilla and sift in the flour slowly, stirring well. Add hot water, in which soda has been dissolved, and beat until smooth. Bake in layers in a moderate oven. Time in baking, 30 minutes. Temperature, 350°. 3 eight-inch layers.
